SEMINOLE
One of the main roles of the Tribal Historic Preservation Office is to share the story of the Seminole people and their ancestors, from the first people of Florida to the modern Seminole Tribe of Florida.
The history of the Seminole people traces back to the first people to walk the sands of Florida. Read about this history here.
The Seminole War began with the invasion of Florida, and it ended with thousands of indigenous people killed or forcibly taken west. For the United States of America, it was the longest and most expensive “Indian War” they fought, and it deeply divided the populace. For the Indigenous people of Florida, it was the defense of their families and homes from a nation determined to see them forced out, enslaved, or dead. Thousands were killed or forcibly taken from Florida over four decades of war. But others survived, unconquered, and their sacrifices allowed the Seminole Tribe of Florida to live today.
